About Sam Altman
Sam Altman is, separately from his OpenAI day job, one of the more active and consequential angels in tech, with a deep portfolio that pre-dates ChatGPT, including Helion, Retro Biosciences, and a long bench of YC-era health and bio bets. His health angel pattern leans toward AI/ML in healthcare, diagnostics, and medtech where the wedge is a frontier-model or compute-heavy capability rather than incremental software, plus longevity and bio bets that could bend a curve. Pre-seed and seed, $250k+ checks, often the kind of name that attracts a follow-on round on its own. San Francisco-based, global reach. The honest read: Altman is enormously hard to reach, and his bandwidth is constrained by OpenAI. Founders most likely to land him are people he already knows from YC, technical AI researchers crossing into bio or health, or founders introduced through Hydrazine, Apollo, or his close circle (Greg Brockman, Brian Chesky, etc.). Generic digital health, services-heavy care delivery, or non-AI medtech will struggle here. Do not bother with Twitter DMs at scale; do not assume the LinkedIn inbox is read. Entry path is a warm intro via a current portfolio founder or YC partner. If you do reach him, lead with technical ambition and what becomes possible only with frontier AI; he optimizes for upside and audacity, not for a clean bottom-up SaaS model.
