STAR Apollo Mapping System
Overview
The STAR Apollo Mapping System by Rhythm AI Ltd is an innovative AI-driven medical device designed to revolutionize the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). It transforms AF procedures by providing cutting-edge, real-time data analysis from existing electrophysiology (EP) systems. Powered by sophisticated AI algorithms rooted in fundamental electrophysiological principles, STAR Apollo uncovers repetitive patterns within arrhythmias and precisely pinpoints early sites of activation (ESAs) of the heart that are potential drivers of AF.
This breakthrough capability empowers physicians to craft highly personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs, significantly improving the diagnosis and treatment of AF. The system integrates seamlessly into current clinical workflows and is compatible with leading EP mapping systems such as Abbott’s EnSite X EP System and Johnson & Johnson’s CARTO 3 Mapping System.
Rhythm AI Ltd, a UK-based company, focuses on optimizing AF procedures and has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510k clearance for the commercial launch version of its STAR Apollo Mapping System. The system assists operators in identifying ESAs and Repetitive Patterns of Activation (RPA) during cardiac mapping procedures for AF.

What Physicians Need to Know
The STAR Apollo Mapping System is designed to assist electrophysiologists in identifying the origins of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) by analyzing intracardiac electrograms. It provides a patient-specific map of AF drivers, including repetitive patterns of activation (RPAs) and early sites of activation (ESAs), to help create customized treatment plans. The system's algorithms replicate what a physician would manually do, given sufficient time, by analyzing AF repetitive activation patterns. It is particularly useful in complex cases, such as redo ablations for persistent AF, where identifying extra-pulmonary targets is crucial for improved outcomes. The system operates outside the sterile field and provides supplementary information to guide further mapping and ablation.
The STAR Apollo Mapping System is a software-driven system that integrates with commercially approved electroanatomic mapping systems. It is compatible with Abbott's EnSite Precision Cardiac Mapping System (Model EE 3000 (V2.6) or Ensite X EP System (V 1.1.1, V 2.0, V 3.0, V 3.1)) and Johnson & Johnson MedTech's CARTO™ 3 Mapping System. The system receives real-time data analysis from the LiveSync™ data transfer function of these mapping systems. It is also designed for use with commercially approved catheters such as the Advisor™ HD Grid Mapping Catheter, Sensor Enabled™ (Abbott Medical), and is compatible with HD Grid, HD Grid X, and OPTRELL Mapping Catheter with TRUEref. The STAR Apollo System is not directly connected to the patient and does not deliver therapy; data transfer is unidirectional from the mapping system to STAR Apollo.

What the Web Says
The STAR Apollo Mapping System by Rhythm AI is an AI-guided cardiac mapping system designed to identify localized sources of atrial activation during atrial fibrillation (AF) and assist physicians in developing targeted ablation strategies. It has received FDA 510(k) clearance and is compatible with major 3D mapping platforms like Abbott's EnSite X EP System and Johnson & Johnson's CARTO 3 Mapping System. The system aims to improve outcomes in complex AF cases by providing real-time data acquisition, analysis, and visualization of electrogram data.
Overall: PositiveStrengths
- AI-guided technology identifies origins of AF regardless of underlying mechanisms.
- Provides precise, patient-specific maps of where AF originates by identifying patterns of activation.
- Enables physicians to build targeted, discrete, and efficient ablation strategies.
- Allows real-time data acquisition, analysis, and visualization by streaming electrogram data.
- Demonstrated improved long-term arrhythmic outcomes in patients with persistent AF in single-center studies.
- Compatible with leading 3D mapping platforms (Abbott's EnSite X EP System and Johnson & Johnson's CARTO 3 Mapping System).
Limitations
- The clinical significance of utilizing the system to help identify areas with intracardiac atrial electrograms of atrial arrhythmias has not been established by clinical investigations.
- The system makes no assumptions of arrhythmia mechanism and does not prescribe any standardized treatment recommendations.
- STAR Mapping had not been cleared by any regulatory authority in the world and was not available for clinical use as of a 2022 presentation.
