Echo Health Ventures

Corporate VC Durham, United States · Founded 2016

Echo Health Ventures is a strategic venture capital and growth equity firm focused on driving systemic healthcare transformation through hands-on, purpose-driven investments. They prioritize long-term partnerships and impact, aiming to accelerate the growth of portfolio companies and scale their innovations nationally.

About Echo Health Ventures

Echo Health Ventures is a strategic venture platform formed in 2016 by Cambia Health Solutions and Mosaic Health Solutions, two regional Blue Cross Blue Shield plan parents, with the explicit purpose of investing in and accelerating innovative healthcare companies and bringing their innovations to scale nationally. Operating primarily out of Seattle, Echo has invested in 54 companies, with a portfolio that has produced six unicorns, two IPOs, and 23 acquisitions including Amwell, Livongo, and Aledade. The franchise sits at an unusual intersection: a pure-play strategic investor that runs with the discipline of a financial fund, backed by parent companies that can serve as both customers and distribution partners for portfolio companies.

Rob Coppedge, the longtime CEO and managing partner, leads the platform and has been the public face of Echo since launch. Before Echo, Coppedge ran Cambia’s diversified business unit, where he oversaw the company’s wholly-owned operating entities and venture portfolio and seeded nearly 20 investments. The Echo team has expanded with senior partners and principals drawn from operating roles inside Blue Cross plans, large health systems, and digital health operating companies. The portfolio reads like a who’s who of validated digital health: Cityblock Health, the value-based primary care platform for underserved Medicaid populations; DispatchHealth, the in-home acute care provider; Heartbeat Health, the virtual cardiology platform; Lantern, the specialty care navigation platform for high-cost surgical, oncology, and infusion procedures; Wildflower Health in maternal and women’s health; Eleanor Health in substance use disorder care; Ideon, the carrier and benefits data infrastructure layer; Abacus Insights, the cloud-based payer data platform; and Medix Infusion, the home infusion services company.

Echo writes initial checks of $5 million to $25 million across Series A through Series C, with the capacity to lead at any of those stages and to follow on into late-stage growth rounds. The fund is happy to participate in syndicates with peer specialists like Oak HC/FT, Optum Ventures, Define Ventures, and Bessemer’s healthcare practice, and frequently co-invests with the venture arms of other large health plans. Geographic scope is United States, with rare exceptions for cross-border companies that have a clear US care-delivery thesis. The firm’s strategic structure makes it especially valuable for digital health companies that sell to or contract with Blue Cross plans, employers, or large self-insured employers, because Echo can broker meaningful pilots and contracts with Cambia, Mosaic, and a broader Blue Cross-affiliated network.

Founders who should approach Echo are tech-enabled care delivery operators, value-based primary care companies, specialty care navigators, behavioral health providers, payer infrastructure builders, and women’s and maternal health companies that have either named pilot customers or a credible enterprise sales motion. Founders who already have demonstrated ability to land and expand inside a payer or self-insured employer will find a particularly receptive audience. Founders building consumer DTC brands without an enterprise wedge, or therapeutics and devices that require FDA approval, should pitch other firms. Echo is also less likely to back companies whose strategic value to Cambia or Mosaic is unclear; the firm is structured to generate strong financial returns but also to pull innovation through to its parent organizations.

Entry path is best run through warm introductions from portfolio CEOs, fellow digital health investors, and the Blue Cross innovation networks. Coppedge and the senior team are reachable at HLTH, ViVE, and AHIP, and the firm runs an editorial presence that signals current thesis priorities. Cold inbound through the website is triaged but converts more reliably with a tight pitch, named customer references, and a clear story on how the company would partner with a payer.

Lead a pitch with the customer wedge, the unit economics, the clinical or operational outcomes story, and an explicit plan for how Echo’s parent companies could be a pilot or scaling partner. The firm’s partners are operators and want to see commercial discipline: net revenue retention, gross margin, sales cycle length, and a credible plan from $5 million to $50 million in ARR. They will also want a strategic narrative that connects to the broader Blue Cross customer set and to value-based care economics. Founders who present with that fluency and who articulate a path to either a strategic exit or a sustainable growth-stage business will find Echo one of the better strategic-yet-disciplined partners in digital health venture.
