Flagship Pioneering is not a venture firm in the traditional sense; it is a venture-creation studio that originates and builds biotechnology and life sciences companies in-house, holds them through their formative years, and then takes them public or sells them, with Moderna as the canonical, world-historical example of the model working. Founded by Noubar Afeyan, Flagship is structured around a stable of “Origination Partners” and “ProtoCos” that begin as internal hypotheses, attract scientific co-founders and operating teams, and graduate into independent companies that Flagship continues to capitalize through later stages.
