GI Genius Module 300
Overview
The GI Genius™ intelligent endoscopy module, including the Module 300, is a groundbreaking, first-to-market computer-aided polyp detection system powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Developed by Cosmo Artificial Intelligence – AI and globally distributed by Medtronic, it is designed to assist endoscopists in real-time detection of colonic mucosal lesions, such as polyps and adenomas, during standard white light endoscopy examinations.
The system works by continuously scanning the video stream from the endoscope camera. When it identifies a potential lesion, it automatically highlights the abnormality with a green box and provides a short, low-volume audible signal, enhancing the physician’s visualization and improving the thoroughness of the examination. Studies have shown that the GI Genius™ module can increase the Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR) by up to 14.4%, contributing to earlier detection and improved patient outcomes in the fight against colorectal cancer.
The GI Genius™ module is compatible with all standard white light endoscopes and is intended to be used as an adjunct to colonoscopy procedures, not as a replacement for clinical decision-making or endoscopist assessment.

What Physicians Need to Know
The GI Geniusu2122 Module 300 serves as a valuable AI-powered adjunct to colonoscopy, acting as an 'ever-vigilant second observer' to enhance polyp detection, especially for subtle or flat lesions that might otherwise be missed. While it significantly improves the Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR) and reduces miss rates, it is crucial to remember that the system is an aid and does not replace clinical judgment, diagnosis, or the need for histopathological sampling. Physicians should continue to exercise their expertise for decision-making regarding lesion characterization and removal. Be aware that the device has not been studied in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a history of colorectal cancer, or previous colonic resection, and its performance may be affected by mucosal irregularities. Leverage its real-time feedback to optimize examination thoroughness and consider its potential to streamline documentation through emerging EHR integrations.
The GI Geniusu2122 module offers seamless integration with existing endoscopy setups, connecting directly to standard endoscopy towers, high-definition endoscopes, video processors, and display monitors. It is compatible with major endoscopic processor brands such as Olympus, Fujifilm, and Pentax, allowing for immediate AI benefits without altering current procedural workflows. Future integrations are being developed, including collaborations with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems like ModMed's gGastrou00ae software, to enable real-time data transfer for automated documentation. The AI Accessu2122 platform also supports the development of third-party applications.

What the Web Says
The Medtronic GI Geniusu2122 Module 300 is an AI-powered endoscopy system designed to assist physicians in detecting colorectal polyps during colonoscopies. It functions as a real-time second observer, enhancing the video stream with graphical markers around areas of interest identified by its computer-aided detection (CADe) algorithm. The system has been shown to significantly improve adenoma detection rates (ADR), which is crucial for preventing colorectal cancer.
Overall: PositiveStrengths
- Increases adenoma detection rate (ADR) significantly, with studies showing up to a 14.4% absolute increase and a 12% relative increase.
- Reduces the miss rate of colorectal polyps and adenomas by approximately 50% compared to standard colonoscopy.
- Identifies small, flat, and subtle polyps that might otherwise be missed by the human eye.
- Provides real-time analysis and flags potential problem areas without modifying or delaying the endoscopy video stream.
- Universally compatible with major existing brands of endoscopic processors (Olympus, Fujifilm, Pentax).
- Can help decrease the risk of interval colorectal cancer; each 1% increase in ADR reduces this risk by 3%.
Limitations
- May not significantly improve the detection of advanced adenomas or sessile serrated lesions.
- Its impact may be less significant among highly experienced endoscopists in real-world scenarios compared to controlled study conditions.
- There is a concern about potential over-reliance on the AI system and a possible drop in ADR if physicians become accustomed to using it and then it's removed.
- Can lead to a small increase in the amount of healthy tissue biopsied.
- The technology can be expensive, leading some centers with already good ADRs to not yet incorporate it.
- Some physicians note that the AI can occasionally miss polyps or highlight areas that are not a concern.
