About Intelligent Ultrasound

Intelligent Ultrasound was a pioneering healthcare AI company that initially focused on two key areas: advanced ultrasound simulation for medical training and AI-driven image analysis for diagnostic support. For physicians, their simulation division offered high-fidelity virtual reality simulators such as ScanTrainer for obstetrics and gynecology, HeartWorks for echocardiography, and BodyWorks Eve for Point of Care and Emergency Medicine, aiming to enhance practical skills and improve diagnostic proficiency. [11, 17, 23] These simulators combined real ultrasound images with haptic feedback and virtual tutors to guide and teach essential scanning skills, addressing the challenge that a small percentage of medical professionals are trained to perform ultrasound scans. [5]

Their clinical AI division developed deep learning-based algorithms to make ultrasound machines smarter and more accessible. [11] This included technologies like ScanNav Assist, which automatically identified and graded ultrasound images, notably integrated into GE HealthCare’s Voluson ultrasound machines as SonoLystlive for faster and more accurate obstetric scans. [5, 11, 23] Another AI product, ScanNav Anatomy PNB, provided real-time AI-based anatomy highlighting for ultrasound-guided needling procedures, aiming to simplify complex interventions. [11, 24] These AI tools were designed to improve diagnostic accuracy, enhance workflow efficiency, and provide clinical decision support, particularly for less experienced operators. [15, 21, 22]

However, the company has undergone significant changes. In October 2024, Intelligent Ultrasound sold its Clinical AI business to GE HealthCare for approximately $51 million (or £40.5 million), with the AI team also joining GE HealthCare. [13, 23] Subsequently, in February 2025, the remaining Intelligent Ultrasound Group, primarily its simulation business, was acquired by Surgical Science Sweden AB for approximately £45.2 million. [9, 10, 14, 20] As a result, Intelligent Ultrasound is now part of Surgical Science, continuing its mission to provide cutting-edge ultrasound simulation and scalable training solutions to healthcare providers globally. [14, 17]

What Physicians Need to Know

Ultrasound Simulation & Medical Training
Intelligent Ultrasound offers a comprehensive suite of ultrasound training simulators, including ScanTrainer for obstetrics and gynecology, HeartWorks for cardiac anatomy and echocardiography, and BodyWorks Eve for general ultrasound. These simulators provide high-fidelity, interactive, and immersive training with real ultrasound cases, haptic feedback technology, and virtual tutors to guide and teach key scanning skills.
AI-Driven Image Analysis
The company specializes in real-time AI-driven image analysis software, such as SonoLystlive and ScanNav Assist AI technology. These tools are designed to provide real-time scan guidance, automate image acquisition and analysis, identify specific organs and abnormalities, and enhance diagnostic accuracy by spotting patterns and anomalies that humans might miss.
Diagnostic Ultrasound Enhancement
Intelligent Ultrasound's AI solutions aim to significantly enhance diagnostic capabilities across various ultrasound specialties. Their technology helps in achieving clearer images, especially in difficult-to-image patients, and provides automated quality assessment, leading to more accurate and precise diagnoses and potentially reducing the need for more expensive or invasive tests.
Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN)
A core specialization is in OB/GYN, with their SonoLystlive AI tool integrated into GE HealthCare's Voluson ultrasound machines to enable faster and more accurate 20-week obstetric scans. Their ScanTrainer simulator also provides comprehensive curriculum for transvaginal and transabdominal OB/GYN ultrasound training.
Echocardiography
Intelligent Ultrasound provides specialized training for echocardiography through its HeartWorks simulator, which offers comprehensive education in cardiac anatomy and function. Their AI advancements also contribute to improved cardiovascular ultrasound systems.
Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS)
Their AI-driven tools are particularly beneficial for POCUS, offering real-time guidance and training directly through the device. This helps less experienced operators acquire diagnostic-quality images and interpret findings more accurately, expanding the utilization of POCUS.
Peripheral Nerve Blocks
The company offers ScanNav Anatomy PNB, a real-time AI assistant specifically designed for the training and clinical practice of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, including peripheral nerve blocks.
Augmented Reality Needle Guidance (AI-Assisted)
While not explicitly termed 'augmented reality needle guidance' by Intelligent Ultrasound, their AI technology provides visual cues and guidance for procedures, highlighting anatomical landmarks and trajectory paths. This real-time feedback enhances accuracy and reduces human error during interventional procedures.
Physician Tip

For physicians, Intelligent Ultrasound's offerings can significantly enhance diagnostic confidence and efficiency. Their AI-driven tools provide real-time guidance, automate repetitive tasks, and improve image quality, leading to more accurate and consistent diagnoses. The simulation platforms offer a safe and effective way to master ultrasound skills, reducing the learning curve and standardizing performance across practitioners. This 'Classroom to Clinic' approach ensures that clinicians are well-trained and supported in real-world clinical scenarios, ultimately improving patient outcomes and streamlining workflows. Consider how their AI can reduce inter-operator variability and free up time for more patient-focused care.

Intelligent Ultrasound has a significant integration with GE HealthCare, where their SonoLystlive AI tool is exclusively installed on GE Voluson ultrasound machines, enhancing obstetric scanning. The company's clinical AI software business was acquired by GE HealthCare, further solidifying this integration and expanding GE HealthCare's AI-enabled ultrasound portfolio. Additionally, Intelligent Ultrasound is now part of Surgical Science, which expands their reach and integrates their world-class ultrasound simulation into a broader medical simulation platform.
