About Monashees

Monashees is the elder statesman of Brazilian venture capital, founded in 2005 in Sao Paulo by Eric Acher and Marcelo Lima at a moment when most international LPs still treated Latin America as an emerging-market afterthought. Two decades and roughly 280 investments later, the firm has accumulated more than $430M across eleven vehicles, anchored most recently by a $150M Fund VIII whose LP base reads like a who’s-who of long-duration capital. Singapore’s Temasek anchored the round, joined by Horsley Bridge Partners, Brandywine Trust Group, the family office S-Cubed Capital, the University of Minnesota endowment, and a roster of Brazilian high-net-worth families who have followed the firm across cycles. That LP composition matters because it tells founders something about the firm’s time horizon and reputation among institutional gatekeepers: Monashees is not a tourist fund, it cannot afford to be tourist with the capital it manages, and its investment behavior reflects that. For healthcare founders, the relevant fact is that Monashees has chosen to stake its second decade in part on healthcare as a structural opportunity, an unusually concentrated bet for a generalist consumer-and-enterprise firm in a region where most VCs still treat the sector as opportunistic. The thesis is intuitive once you map it onto the ground reality: Brazil runs a dual system in which the SUS public network covers roughly 75 percent of the population while a fragmented private market layers expensive plans, brokers, and provider groups on top, and the inefficiencies between those two stacks are wide enough to fund a generation of startups. Caio Bolognesi, the General Partner who co-leads health, SaaS, and B2B investing, has been the most visible face of that thesis, and his portfolio anchor is Sami Saude, the value-based health plan operator targeting SMEs that Monashees has backed across multiple rounds including the firm’s participation alongside Valor and Redpoint in subsequent expansions. Pipo Saude, the digital broker for company healthcare benefits, came out of the same cohort and was co-led with Kaszek and ONEVC at Series A in 2020 in a $4.6M round, then attracted Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital to lead a $20M expansion in 2021. Memed, the e-prescription platform that has become the de facto digital prescription rail for many Brazilian providers, anchors the prescribing infrastructure side of the portfolio, and Olist Saude in the broader marketplace adjacency completes a portfolio that skews toward tech-enabled services and software disrupting payers, brokers, and prescribing rather than pure clinical AI or therapeutics. On AI specifically, Monashees has signaled clearly that it views healthcare as one of the few verticals where Brazilian application-layer AI can outrun US competitors because of regulatory familiarity, language, and the sheer mess of incumbent workflows that motivated US companies have no reason to attack. Stage-wise the firm is most useful at Seed and Series A with check sizes in the $1M to $5M band, though it will follow on aggressively into Series B and beyond, and it leads or co-leads the majority of its early-stage deals rather than tagging in. Its lead behavior matters because Monashees runs the kind of long-horizon, high-conviction relationships that founders building regulated healthcare businesses actually need; the firm has stayed on cap tables through bridge rounds, government policy shifts, and SUS reimbursement adjustments that would have spooked tourist investors. The partnership remains small and concentrated around Acher, Lima, Bolognesi, and a tight team of senior investors operating from Sao Paulo, which means a portfolio company essentially gets a single sponsoring partner and that partner’s full attention rather than a diluted associate-led relationship. Founders who fit are Brazilian or LatAm operators building tech-enabled health services, payer-facing software, prescription and pharmacy infrastructure, AI tools that demonstrably reduce administrative load on Brazilian providers, and category-defining consumer-health businesses that can plausibly cross national borders within the region. Founders who do not fit include US-based healthcare companies hoping for a strategic LatAm beachhead investor (Monashees wants founders living in the market and operating in Portuguese), pure biotech or therapeutics teams (out of scope), single-country plays without a regional thesis, and AI research labs without a near-term clinical or commercial deployment path. The right intro path is through a portfolio CEO such as Sami, Pipo, or Memed, or through one of the LP-aligned regional family offices and Brazilian operator networks. Cold inbound is read but rarely converts. In the pitch, lead with unit economics against the SUS-versus-private cost wedge, demonstrate regulatory literacy on ANS and ANVISA where relevant, and quantify either provider time saved or member-level medical loss ratio improvement; vague TAM-multiplied-by-penetration narratives do not survive partner-level diligence. Avoid pitching translated US business models without a Brazilian go-to-market thesis, and be prepared to articulate why your wedge survives an FX shock or a regulatory tightening. The caveats are real: Monashees moves at a measured pace by US standards, the partnership is small enough that you live or die by your sponsoring partner’s conviction, the firm has historically preferred Portuguese-speaking founder teams operating in-country which can be a friction point for diaspora entrepreneurs returning from the US, and exit liquidity in Brazilian healthcare remains thin enough that founders should expect a long-duration relationship rather than a near-term IPO path.
