VELYS Hip Navigation
Overview
VELYS™ Hip Navigation is a next-generation software solution powered by the VELYS™ Hub that includes AI capabilities to automate image interpretation, consistently identify landmarks, and increase procedural efficiencies in total hip arthroplasty (THA). This non-invasive, integrated software system is designed for pre-operative planning and intraoperative execution, providing accurate, real-time templating and intraoperative data to assist in the precise positioning of total hip replacement components. The system helps surgeons better plan and measure key aspects of hip replacement, potentially leading to improved hip stability, preservation of natural movement, and reduced risk of dislocation. It integrates digital analysis into the surgical workflow and does not require advanced imaging like CT scans, pins, arrays, or disposables, which may be needed with other navigation systems. This can potentially reduce OR time and fluoroscopy dose while maintaining surgical precision.

What the Web Says
VELYS Hip Navigation is a non-invasive, AI-powered digital surgery system designed to enhance precision and efficiency in total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures. It provides surgeons with real-time, patient-specific data to guide implant selection and positioning, aiming to improve outcomes and reduce complications.
Overall: PositiveStrengths
- Improved accuracy in implant sizing and positioning, leading to better hip stability and natural movement.
- Potential to reduce operative time and radiation dose for both patients and surgical staff.
- Automates intraoperative image interpretation and landmark identification, streamlining workflows.
- Provides real-time, patient-specific insights on leg length, offset, and cup position.
- Does not require additional CT scans or extra incisions, unlike some robotic systems.
- Surgeons maintain control over final anatomical decisions due to a human-in-the-loop AI design.
Limitations
- Potential for additional cost, with some insurers not covering it as a separate add-on.
- Requires an assistant to hold retractors and ensure camera visibility of arrays, which may require adjustment to workflow.
- Effectiveness is still dependent on the surgeon's skill and experience; it is a tool to guide, not replace, the surgeon.
- Some studies on similar navigation systems have shown increased operative time with fluoroscopic guidance.
- The value of certain analyses is dependent on the surgeon's ability to achieve a level pelvis for accurate imaging.
